Fe - Iron

The Iron Age was underway by 1000 BC; since then, the history of our technology based civilization has been the history of iron. Iron's strength was its first virtue and it's ferromagnetic properties are a gift. Iron is not without drawbacks, however. When in the presence of water, iron readily reacts with oxygen, making rust: a brittle, flimsy, red powder which is mostly useless. Iron is a relatively abundant element in the universe. It is found in the sun and many types of stars in considerable quantity. Iron nuclei are very stable. Iron is a vital constituent of plant and animal life, and is the key component of haemoglobin.
