Features for collaborative working
Creating a digital archive for the institute
It will be possible to create a digital archive (or improve a preexisting one) thanks to tools available exclusively for research institutes:
- Automatic program for acquiring documents shared by the institute's researchers
- Programs for the management of large archives
- Guaranteed access right to metadata for research institute administrators
- Identification of documents as coming from a particular research center
- Web display: search and display of the metadata of all the documents of the institution on the dA website and/or that institution's website
Such an archive (as a whole or just selected parts) can be open to all the peer network of digitAlexandria and OAI users, or exclusively for internal use. For example, you can decide to make available to the public only certain types of documents, or those which have been approved by a commission, or those which you decide to publish with the tools made available by the system to the librarians of the institute.
Tools for publishing
Administrative tools which will allow for the management (indexing, cataloguing, abstracts), the valorization (peer review, management of text formats) and distribution of publications to give the maximum support to the creation of scientific publications based on the work undertaken within the organization.
Features for collaborative working
Thanks to a set of features including internal communication, versioning, comments on documents, working groups and obviously the constant sharing of all documents, researchers and research groups can work together closely and efficiently even when they are working a long way from each other. For example, research groups working on large subjects (such as nuclear fusion or genome mapping) who are generally scattered around the globe with limited connections, can work together as if they were in the same room. dA can also be useful for translation of texts, elaboration of glossaries and encyclopedias, experimental research in remote areas, etc.
The digitAlexandria aims to be a universal tool for the distribution of knowledge, the standard for communication and collaboration between researchers around the globe. Supporting the project means committing your name and that of your institute to one of the most innovative and ambitious initiatives in the field of information technology.
Furthermore, the digitAlexandria will also guarantee:
- Online assistance: dA staff will always be available for online clarifications, for software installation or trouble shooting.
- Branding: Logo and description of the member institution on the digitAlexandria web site; name of the institution as a document search option on the client
Advantages
The digitAlexandria technology allows the owner to keep both the ownership and the physical copy of the documents (no upload to any server is needed anymore), thus leaving to the owner the total control of his archive; furthermore, an extremely flexible and fair price policy allows even the smallest laboratory to make up its own branded digital archive.
Thanks to Archivemaker the efficiency of research has seen substantial improvements: researchers are constantly updated and keep in touch with each other, the time needed for bibliographic research has been substantially cut; know-how is transferred to a wide audience almost instantly. This could allow for a return to a virtuous cycle of research, in which the commencement of new research and the distribution of results work together in synergy, maximizing the impact of each piece of research on current and future projects, with benefits to the prestige of both the institute and the researchers themselves.
Optimizing research is a key problem for every research center, not only regarding the wider world, but also within the institute itself. Research and technical solutions are studied and restudied endlessly simply because they never leave the lab in which they were created, or because they remain limited to a small number of insiders, when instead they could be a valuable public resource, making the work of the entire scientific community easier.
